Historical background
The history of the city began when Russian Cossacks founded the winter quarters of Udinskoye in 1666.built to collect yasak from the local Tungus clansand located on the high right bank of the Uda River, near its mouth..
Since 1678 he has been known as Udinsky Ostrog.
In 1689 it was turned into the Verkhneudinsk fortress. In 1690 the burg received the status of the city and the name Udinsk, in 1735 the settlement was renamed Verkhneudinsk.
In 1775 it received the status of city and coat of arms in accordance with the Charter of liberties to the cities of Catherine II, from 1783 - a district town of Irkutsk province. In the 18th, 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries it was an administrative, military, cultural, trading and industrial center of Western Transbaikalia - Transbaikalian region, and also administrative center of Verkhneudinsk uyezd.
After 1917 Verhneudinsk was the center of Pribaikalskaya Province; in April-October 1920 it was the capital of the Far Eastern Republic (DVR); from May 30, 1923 it was the capital of the Buryat-Mongol ASSR.
July 27, 1934 decision of the Presidium of the CEC of the USSR renamed Ulan-Ude (Bur. Ulaan Υde - Red Uda).
On July 7, 1957, with the renaming of the republic became the capital of the Buryat ASSR.
On October 5, 1971 Zabaikalsky settlement was transferred from the administrative subordination of Oktyabrsky district of Ulan-Ude to Ulan-Ude district.
Since March 27, 1992 Ulan-Ude is the capital of the subject of the Russian Federation Republic of Buryatia.
By the Law of the Republic of Buryatia March 9, 2010 № 1313-IV "On Amendments to the Law of the Republic of Buryatia "On establishing borders, formation and conferring status on municipalities in the Republic of Buryatia" settlements of urban type Zarechny, Sokol, villages Zabaikalsky, Istok, Soldatsky, Stepnoy, Tulunzha, settlement at Mostovoy station are excluded from the number of settlements and included in the city of Ulan-Ude.
