Посёлок Smysastroy был основан в 1927 году в связи со строительством Сясьского ЦБК, на месте деревни Носок.

17 февраля 1992 года указом Президиума Верховного Совета РСФСР № 2365-1 рабочий посёлок Smysastroy был отнесён к категории городов районного подчинения.
