The city in the Vologda region of Russia. Administrative center of the Sokolsky District, forms the urban settlement of Sokol.

Historical background

In the document of 1615 in the place of the modern city is mentioned the village of Sokolovo, the name of which is formed from the nickname Sokol, very common in the XVI-XVII centuries.

In 1897, the construction of a paper factory began in the village, which was named Sokol after the village; the same name was given to the factory settlement. According to the census of December 17, 1926, the population of the factory settlement Sokol was 5936 people.

On March 2, 1932 the settlement was transformed into the town of Sokol by the resolution of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. The city limits included the adjacent villages of Karpovo, Medvedevo-Pustoshnoye and Sokolovo of Sokol village council, Sukhona station with Sukhonsky settlement of Sverdlovsk village council[3]. June 1, 1932 in the city limits included Sverdlov plant with a settlement (Pechatkino), sawmill № 40 with a settlement (Malyutino), timber loading Sevlesproma with a railway line, condensed milk plant with a pioneer settlement, the village of Voskresenje, the villages of Berdinka, Yenza, Pirogovo, Leschevka, Rossokha, Antsiferovka, Shatenevo and Ovetsovo..

On September 21, 2000, the coat of arms of Sokolsky District and the town of Sokol were approved by the decision № 373 of the Sokol Municipal District Municipal Council. The author of the coat of arms: О. Sviridenko.

In 2010, Sokol, which remains a major center of wood processing and pulp and paper industry, became one of the first three single-industry towns to receive federal budget funds for the implementation of development projects; this allowed, in particular, the construction of a new plywood production plant at the Sokol Industrial Park in 2012-2017.

By the RF Government Order No. 1398-r dated July 29, 2014 "On approval of the list of single-industry towns", the Sokol Urban Settlement was included in the category "Mono-profile municipalities of the Russian Federation (single-industry towns) with risks of deterioration of the socio-economic situation"
