Historical background

It sprang up in the XV century as a wharf on the Yug river under the name Nikolskiy pogost (Nikolskaya sloboda); it was named after the church. At that time a trade route connecting the Northern Dvina basin with Vetluga and Volga passed through Yug.

In 1780 in the course of Catherine's provincial reform Nikolskoe village was transformed into a district town of Vologda viceroyalty, Nikolskiy uyezd was formed.

In December 1796 Emperor Paul I issued a decree "On the new division of the State into provinces", on the basis of which, in particular, the Vologda province was established.

The main occupations of the inhabitants in the XIX - early XX century were flax farming, dairy and meat cattle breeding and hunting.
