First mentioned in 1576 as the village of Lazdinay. In 1734 it was renamed to Lazdenen (German name from the Baltic basis lazd "hazel"). It belonged to the historical region of Nadrovia.
Under Hitler it was renamed Hazelberg as part of the campaign to eliminate toponymy of Old Prussian ("Lithuanian") origin in the Third Reich. As part of Germany (East Prussia) until 1945.
On January 18, 1945 the city was taken by troops of the 3rd Belorussian Front during the Insterburg-Koenigsberg operation. Since 1945 it was a part of the USSR (RSFSR). In 1946 it was renamed Krasnoznamensk. When preparing the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR of September 7, 1946 on assigning new names to the district centers of the Kaliningrad region, the Soviet authorities considered the name Sheshupinsk for the city (according to the geographical principle - in honor of the river Sheshupa), but eventually chose the name Krasnoznamensk.
From 2006 to 2015, the city was the center of the abolished Krasnoznamensky urban settlement within the former municipal district.
