Ivdel

Before the appearance of a settlement here, in 1589 at the mouth of the river Ivdel built the first wooden fortress beyond the Urals - Lozva town.

The settlement was founded on October 28 (15), 1831 as a settlement at the gold panning factory of V. A. Vsevolozhsky, washing gold-bearing sands of Preobrazhensky and Znamensky placers. The settlement is located near the mouth of the river Shapsha to the river Ivdel, about 5 kilometers upstream of the river Ivdel from the modern city of Ivdel. The second name of the settlement was Shapsha.

North Dacha in 1849, after the death of V. A. Vsevolozhsky in 1836, passed to his youngest son Nikita. The village, which was named Nikito-IvdelskoeIt was moved downstream of the Ivdel River to its present location. In 1849-1898 there was located North Zaozerka gold mines administration of N. V. Vsevolozhskiy and his heirs, and later - North Zaozerka gold mines administration. In 1853 the village received the status of the village in connection with the opening and consecration of the Nikitinskaya church.

In 1871 a zemstvo school was opened.

By early 1900 the village had 2 churches, 6 shops, a zemstvo school and, in 1910, a library.. At the beginning of the XX century. the main occupation of the inhabitants was gold mining: prospecting and washing gold for luck, found gold surrendered to the office of the board of the North Zaozero cottage for 3 rubles per zlotnik. A small part of the inhabitants worked for a daily wage at the successful goldsmiths. 2-3 % of the population were artisans, carpenters, masons, and others, and they all belonged to the natives of Vyatka province.

In 1924 Nikito-Ivdel village renamed to IvdelOn May 28, 1943, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR Ivdel village was transformed into a town of regional subordination with the former name. In 1923-1946 Ivdel was the center of the district of the same name. In 1925, logging began.

In 1937, Ivdellag was formed and the construction of the Serov - Polunochnoye railroad began. In 1939 the first train passed through. In 1940 the building of the railway station was built.

On February 1, 1963 the Ivdel City Council of Workers' Deputies was subordinated to the Sverdlovsk Regional Council of Workers' Deputies.

December 17, 1995 in a referendum on determining the boundaries and structure of local government of the municipality was formed municipality "Ivdel City" consisting of the city of Ivdel and the administrative territories of the villages Polunochnoye, North, Chorpia, Ous, Maslovo, Sama, Ekaterininka, Ponil. June 2, 2005 Ivdel City Duma decision № 91 approved the Charter of the Ivdel City District.

On August 25, 1937 there was an order to transfer the property of the Ivdel timber company "Sverdles" to the system of the GULAG NKVD of the USSR. The first colony appeared in the village of Burmantovo (83 km from Ivdel). At first the camp contingent consisted mainly of "enemies of the people". One of the first was the camp unit in the village of Sama (south of Ivdel). This was the "gateway" where the convicts who got into the Ivdelag system were received and from where they were distributed. The construction of the Sama-Ivdel railroad began with the efforts of the prisoners. Soon a whole ramified network was formed. The largest camp unit was in the Vizhay settlement. Significant units were in the settlements of Ponil, Shipichny, Talitsa, and the settlements of Bor, Yurtishche, Pristan, Lacha, and Mityaevo. Colonies appeared in Langur, Losiny, Gluharny settlements and in other places to the south of Ivdel. Colonies also sprang up in Ivdel itself. Most were engaged in logging. In addition, several mines were opened for the extraction of minerals.

In 1951, the Ivdel camp consisted of 15 sections, including 47 camp sites, which housed over 22,000 convicts at a time..

Since the 1950s, the number of prisoners declined. But up until the mid-1980s their number in Ivdel remained significant - up to 12-15 thousand people.

With the collapse of the USSR, the system of the former Ivdelag collapsed as well. At present there are three divisions of the Federal Penitentiary Service here (there are 40 in total in the Sverdlovsk Region). They are mostly located within the city and in neighborhoods.
