Historical background

Возник до 1848 года как село Староострожное. С 1897 по 1923 год посёлок назывался «Заво́йко» — в честь известного камчатского губернатора В. С. Завойко, при котором во время т. н. Петропавловской обороны 1854 был успешно отражён десант англо-французской эскадры. В 1923 году был переименован в честь командира партизанского отряда Георгия Матвеевича Елизова, погибшего на Камчатке в 1922 году.
