Bogoroditsk

Bogoroditsk belongs to the old Russian towns, whose original history is associated with the defense from enemies of the southern borders of the medieval Moscow state. Not far from the place where Bogoroditsk later appeared, the famous battle of Kulikovo took place in 1380.

At the beginning of the XVI century with the aim of strengthening the southern and southeastern borders of the state there was established a defensive frontier - Zasechnaya Border. Many outposts within its borders gradually became towns, among them Bogoroditsk, founded by the decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. In 1663, a wooden fortress appeared on the site of the guard post, which was given its present name. Around the fortress grew slobodas of farmers, artisans, archers. The city lost its defensive value with the extension of the borders to the south.

Originally Bogoroditsk (in seventeenth-century sources it was Bogoroditskaya) was considered an urban settlement, i.e. the military-administrative and economic center of the county. In 1670-1671 a new Bogoroditsk uyezd was formed from a part of the lands of Dedilovsky and Epifansky uyezds. In 1763 Bogoroditsk was turned into Bogoroditskoye village, in 1765 together with the lands of Bobriki village it became Catherine the Great's own parish, in 1768 it was called Sloboda, but in connection with the provincial reform of 1777 it was again raised to the rank of a town. In 1771-1784 on the high left bank of the river Uperta, where Bogoroditsk fortress was located earlier, the palace and park ensemble of count Bobrinskys was built. Bogoroditsk received a plan based on the radial-beam system. In 1797 by the decree of Paul I Bogoroditsk was transformed into a district town, and in 1802 it received back its former status. Count Alexei Grigorievich Bobrinsky, illegitimate son of Empress Catherine II, lived in the town for a long time.

The first industrial enterprises focused on the processing of agricultural products appeared in Bogoroditsk in the early XIX century. The oldest of them, sugar-beet factory of Count A. A. Bobrinsky. By 1860, in addition to sugar-beet factories, there were mills, mills, tanneries, and distilleries. In the vicinity of the city were mined clay and sand. In the early 1870s, with the opening of the Elets branch of the Syzran-Vyazemskaya railroad, the development of coal deposits in Tovarkovsky, Malevsky and Savinsky mines began.

In 1924-1934 Bogoroditsk was the center of Bogoroditsk district. From 1926 it lost the status of a district town due to the liquidation of Bogoroditsk County.

In 1934, after the abolition of Bogoroditsky district, the city became part of the Uzlovsky district.

In 1936-1944 Bogoroditsk was the center of Tovarkovsky district, then the center of the reconstituted Bogoroditsk district.

During the Great Patriotic War, the city was under occupation from November 15 to December 15, 1941. During this time the Nazis executed 32 people and destroyed 65 % houses during the retreat. The city was liberated by the 324th Infantry Division and the 41st Cavalry Division of the 10th Army.

February 1, 1963 received the status of the city of regional subordination of the Tula region.

Since 2006 - the urban settlement of Bogoroditsky district.
