Historical background

Байкальск основан в 1961 году как посёлок строителей Байкальского целлюлозно-бумажного комбината (БЦБК). Во времена его строительства существовали планы создания здесь мощного индустриального центра. Через пять лет, в 1966 году, когда БЦБК выдал первую продукцию, Байкальск получил статус города.

В 2010 году территория города частично вошла в особую экономическую зону туристско-рекреационного типа «Ворота Байкала».
