Abaza

The city was founded in 1856, first as a settlement in connection with the development of the Abakan iron ore deposit. In 1867, the Ural merchant Kolchugin founded and put into operation iron foundry and ironworks, which operated until 1926. In 1868 the settlement was renamed into the village Abakano-Zavodskaya. In the early 1920s the village was a part of Tashtypsky rayon of Khakass district.

In 1921 the volost Congress of People's Deputies (in early 1920 Abakano-Zavodskaya volost was established) decided to rename the village Abakano-Zavodskaya into the village Abaza. From 1926 to 1957 the field was not exploited. In 1956 Abaza was given the status of a working settlement. In 1957 ore mining was resumed. In 1966 the settlement was transformed into a town, and in 2003 it became a city of republican subordination.
